What a tournament! What a great weekend of fun, socialising and just a heck of a lot of pool. Pool fanatics and newbies alike had the time of their lives at The Annual Timeout Cup held at Timeout Sports Bar, Kyalami this past weekend- all 182 of them.
Yes, you heard right, 182 contestants took part in what is officially the biggest club tournament in the history of club tournaments. The only other club tournament that came close to that number was the previous Timeout Cup that boasted 140 contestants. Cuesportfever has done a tremendous job of transforming the look and feel of what a club tournament should be. Of course these feats can only be accomplished with the assistance of venues like Timeout Sports Bar and forward thinking owners like, Jayson and Shantal Yeriah. CSF + TIMEOUT = R50,000 cash tournament at just R200 entry fee, unheard of in Africa! So a big shout out goes to Jayson and Shantal and the Timeout management and staff. A second even bigger shout out goes to all you awesome pool players who support Cuesportfever at these events. Cuesportfever, in collaboration with Timeout, endeavour to make these tournaments bigger and better for as long as you keep supporting in the professional manner that you do.

The day of the team event was probably the most exciting and fun day of the whole weekend. With 30 six man teams arriving on the day, most of them never having played together before, the scene was set for maximum fun. Barring a few Eskom mishaps and a faulty microphone the day turned out to be a huge success for the players and the venue. The teams battled it out in what most players consider to be one of the most exciting team formats they’ve ever played in. After the round robin stages the knockouts were nothing short of ferocious. Team Avengers were the eventual winners after having destroyed all and sundry, including Ipintombi who were the eventual runners-up. All in all a well-deserved win.
Timeout Sports Bar hosted a free after party for all contestants with great DJ’s, drink specials and prizes. Everyone had a ball after a day of potting balls.
SUNDAY MAY 22, 2016 – SINGLES EVENT
The size and quality of the field was ginormous by any standards. The champions, well the champions, there were just so many of them. Having just come back from China, where he partook in one of the world’s biggest pool tournaments, Velli Diamond was but one of many pool name brands to attend the Timeout Cup. As tournaments would go, the field became smaller as the day progressed and in the final we saw two SA Champions meet- Juanaine Nicholas and Mzamo Ntleringe (current 8Ball SA Champ). The old goat, Juanaine, seemed to prevail against one of the most prolific tournament winners of late and beat Mzamo/Mzet 8-2. Well when I say prevail what I actually meant to say is clinically tear apart. Who knew he still had it in him. Having come through the Senior category he beat the likes of Raja Naidoo, Marco Burroughs and Freaks. Then in the Open category he met up with Velli Diamond, Senzo, Sbu Gumede and eventually Mzamo. He literally went through a who’s who of Pool in a single tournament. This certainly was a well-deserved win for Slicky J. Go Slicky!
